Vu & Sheryl Nuygen

Vu came to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam when he was seven years old and grew up in Wheaton, Illinois. Sheryl grew up in Taiwan as a missionary kid. She came to Wheaton for a year when she was in the 7th grade which is when she and Vu first met. They met again after college but both parted ways for several years. It was not until the third time in 1997 that they met again and realized they had feelings for each other. They were married in 1999. In 2006 their daughter, Lan, was born.

Sheryl and Vu first came to Santarem with PAZ in 2003 on a short-term missions team with their church. They fell in love with the river and Brazil. They came back with another team from their church in 2005 and felt the same love for the Amazon that they had sensed in 2003. Then in 2009, they came with just their family to verify the calling to the Amazon they felt had been growing since 2003. After much prayer and consultation they decided God was calling them to the Amazon basin with PAZ as full-time missionaries. They feel called to work in the guesthouse ministry hosting short term teams that journey out on the river to further the Gospel of Christ.
