Melvin Edward Huber 1920-2008

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day…” 2 Timothy 4:7-8b

On Saturday, August 30, a great man finished his race. Melvin Huber leaves behind a legacy of lasting fruit and blessings. He and his wife Katherine served as missionaries in Brazil for over 50 years, preaching the Gospel, making disciples and planting churches. All his children serve the Lord with their lives, one even giving his life for the Lord (Luke Huber, founder of Project AmaZon). Even all his grandchildren serve the Lord with their lives. People in several continents have been profoundly touched, encouraged, trained and won for Christ by this man.

Wanting to serve the Lord on the mission field until the very end, Melvin passed away in the city of Parintins — an island city in the Amazon River where he lived and ministered with his daughter and caregiver, Angela.

Story upon story could be told about Melvin’s perseverance, his prayer life and love for the Lord. Stories could be told about how he would cry when preaching the wonderful news of the Gospel, or how he lived a life of profound faith that affected everyone around him. And it would only be the tip of a large iceberg of stories that reflect Melvin’s character. In all these things, he always gave glory to God, and would do so now if he were with us. But now he joins Katherine, his son Luke and the great cloud of witnesses in heaven giving glory to the Lamb!

On Sunday, August 31, Melvin’s body was flown from Parintins to Santarém, where his wife Katherine and son Luke are buried. The fire department led the procession from the airport through Santarém, past a number of PAZ churches. Hundreds gathered outside each church, bidding their farewells.
